First time parents ask a lot of question in relation to child health. However, majority tend to neglect asking one of the most common questions in reference to the proper time when they should take their child to a dentist. Is there such a thing as being too early for dental visit?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) has a very short response to this query. First birthday signals the first dental visit. This may be too early for most parents, but these groups of pediatrics and dentists believe that this will bring forth more benefits to your child than you can ever imagine.

Statistics show that by the time children reach the age of four, more than one out of four children shows signs and symptoms of dental cavity and decay. This is caused by several factors which includes improper oral hygiene and inappropriate dietary habits.

Parents are the first one who should be educated regarding the right way of brushing one’s teeth and the right combination of food groups that their children should eat to maintain a strong and healthy body. These techniques and procedures are better learned through a family dentist.

There are more things that parents should know with regards to their infant’s oral health.

Some of these includes:

The proper amount of fluoride to use

Oral habits that should not be tolerated

Prevention of oral and facial accidents,

And more importantly, the simple methods they can use in case they come face to face with early dental emergencies like broken tooth or loose tooth caused by accidents.

Taking care of your children’s oral health is of utmost priority. There are lots of diseases and infections associated to improper oral hygiene.

Choose a dentist that is warm and friendly towards kids. He should be affectionate and sensitive to children tantrums and can easily elaborate dental terms to you when you need it the most.

The moment you found the perfect dentist, always maintain an open communication with him and do not hesitate to inquire about your child’s teeth development, biting, sucking and teething. Do not forget to keep his contact details in case you need to ask his assistance in the near future. Pediatric dentists may be the most important friend you may ever need to maintain the good well being of your child. For more questions regarding pediatric dentists, kindly view Sola Dental Kids and be satisfied.

You may not know but fluoride is naturally found in water. This is probably the best reason why your dentists often inquire about your water supply. But how important is fluoride content in a child’s mouth? What is the recommended amount of fluoride required for a child to maintain strong and healthy teeth? What are the disadvantages if the fluoride amount exceeds the required amount of dosage?

Fluoride acts as the mouth’s soldier. Coupled with other vital minerals like calcium and phosphorus, it aids in the prevention of acid build-up in your mouth which is caused by excessive consumption of starchy foods and sweets. In doing so, it prevents the accumulation of plaque which causes tooth enamel’s de-mineralization. Furthermore by eliminating excessive acid build-up in the mouth, fluoride supports the restoration and repair of damaged teeth through the process of re-mineralization.

Nevertheless, parents should be very cautious with regards to the amount of fluoride which may be absorbed by their children. According to mouth specialists, it is not recommended that kids aged two years old and below use toothpastes which are rich in fluoride and if ever they do reach the age of two years old, it is best advised that they use only fluoride toothpastes that contain the ADA’s acceptance seal. Nevertheless, it is best that kids maintain a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to avoid over absorption of it. Always supervise your kids while they brush because they tend to enjoy the taste of most flavored fluoride toothpaste and think of it as candy.

Proper monitoring is a must for parents to guarantee that their children are not overexposed to fluoride because overexposure to it may be more detrimental to your children’s health than you could ever have thought of. In a recent study made concerning fluorosis, an abnormal discoloration which appears in permanent teeth, researchers diagnosed that the inappropriate and inconsiderate use of dental products which contains fluoride is the root of this oral infection. They therefore strictly prohibited that parents allow their children to use mouth rinses that contains fluoride. If this is deemed necessary, then wait for your dentist to prescribe it rather than you taking matters in your own hands.

The common belief that fluoride is good for oral health is still a fact but parents should always consult their family dentist to know the appropriate time when to give such treatment to their children.

If you have any further inquiries pertaining to this matter, you can always refer to http://www.soladentalkids.com

Smile make-over may not be a necessity but it is indeed a choice you should grab especially if it means gaining more self-confidence in your life. It requires a combination of cosmetic dentistry procedures which can either be composite bonding, dental implants or teeth whitening. It magically fixes anything that you wish to change in your smile while taking into consideration your hair color, facial appearance, skin tone, gum tissue and lip structure.

Common Disliked Smile Aspects

Gummy Smile

This is the excessive gingival display every time a person smiles. Excessive gum tissues found in the mouth overshadows the upper teeth’s appearance when you smile. This is normally corrected through surgical lip repositioning, laser treatments or orthodontic braces.

Missing Teeth

Who amongst us would like to smile if in doing so a missing tooth will appear before a crowd. This is certainly a disaster and a major cause for a person’s loss of self-esteem. Although loss of teeth may be caused by several factors, smile make-over knows how valuable a single tooth can be for a person’s smile. This is resolved through bridges, dental implants or partial dentures.

Crooked and overlapping teeth

These problematic factors in a person’s smile are eliminated through Invisalign. It acts as an invisible brace solution which is composed of invisible plastic aligners which is carefully crafted to perfectly and comfortable fit your teeth. It is the better esthetic alternative to the conventional wire and bracket dental braces which are certainly an eyesore in our smile.

Stained or Dulled Teeth

The teeth’s color should be white but because of food stains and smoking most people notices that their teeth’s color suddenly gets stained and dulled. Smile make-over fixes this through teeth whitening or bleaching.

Several factors are taken into consideration by your dentist before proceeding with any smile make-over procedures. These factors include the tooth’s length, proportion, texture and characterization coupled with a person’s smile line. It may be an expensive feat but the results will definitely be satisfactory and provide you the needed boost in your career and lifestyle.

Dental veneers which are also referred to as dental porcelain laminates or porcelain veneers are artificially made shells of tooth-colored materials which are fashioned to cover the frontal surface of the teeth. It aims to be the perfect solution to the following set of teeth problems namely discolored teeth, worn down teeth, chipped or broken teeth, uneven, misaligned, or irregularly shaped teeth with bulges and craters, and gap teeth. The porcelain or resin composite materials applied on the teeth’s surface coupled with the light’s reflective capacity allows the porcelain or resin veneer to capture the teeth’s natural color.

A decision to take advantage of these benefits of dental veneers requires a person to have a minimum of three visits to his or her dentist. The dental visits include the following:

The Planning Stage or Consultation

Inform your dentist before hand of your desired result. In this manner, he may provide you alternative methods which can be done to achieve your goal. It will require him to do a thorough examination of your teeth so he can assess if your mouth is fit to undergo the treatment. His examination may also include a few mouth x-rays so he can make a proper impression of your both your teeth and mouth.

Preparation Stage

In your second visit, your dentist will inject a local anesthetic on your mouth in preparation for the removal of approximately .5 millimeter of your tooth’s enamel. This amount is the equivalent amount of the veneer which will be placed on your teeth. This material combined with his earlier study on your mouths condition will be used in the construction of your veneer. He will make an impression of you’re tooth which will then be sent to a dental laboratory which will construct the veneer for you. The construction will take roughly one to two weeks just in time for the final stage of the procedure.

Final Stage

Once the constructed veneer is received by your dentist, it will be permanently cemented on your tooth. The tooth color is carefully matched with your natural teeth’s hue and will be carefully fitted to the tooth. The veneer will then be cemented on your tooth which will soon be polished, cleaned and etched for a stronger bonding process to take place. A special light beam will be used to the dental veneer that will trigger the activation of the chemical components found in the cement mixture. The dentist will then check the tooth for any excess cement that may hinder or affect your daily bites.

Dental implants are making wonders for many people who suffered from missing tooth and jaw bone loss. It is categorized under prosthetic dentistry because it acts as artificial replacement for loss teeth. It replaces missing tooth roots which allow the person the required durability and strength to once again chew their favorite food and delicacies. It also enhances a person’s self-confidence because he can once again offer the world the perfect smile he once enjoyed with his natural teeth. This is certainly the best choice of anyone who wishes to regain control of his teeth’s functionality and structure.

Dental implants are not readily performed on anyone who wishes for this type of procedure. It first requires a careful examination of your gums and teeth which will be conducted by an oral surgeon or a periodontist. It will include a couple of CT scans and X-rays which will aid your dentist in finding the exact location of the future implant. At times, pre-dental implant procedures like bone and tissue grafting may be applied to the mouth especially if your dentist realizes that there is no sufficient bone or gum tissue which will support the implant. After securing the place of the implant, the dentist will then proceed with the preparation of the jaw for implantation and the actual dental implant on the specified location. This requires dental expertise and great skill on the part of the oral surgeon who will perform the operation. So make sure you find a highly skilled cosmetic dentist who will perform this sensitive operation on you.

The entire healing process of the surgical procedure may last for six months while the installation, seating and fitting of the tooth’s crown may add another two months to the treatment. This long, intricate and sensitive procedure will require the patient’s utmost cooperation and strict observance of oral hygiene which includes soft food diet for the first five to seven days especially after each major dental procedure. Regular tooth floss and proper brushing habit should be implemented on a daily basis and smoking should be eliminated from your lifestyle. Only in this manner can one ensure the avoidance of infection to occur near the dental implant and within its surrounding premises. For additional information, you may view information located at http://www.soladentalspa.com

Side by side with the advancement of medical technology is the birth of a new wave of dentists called cosmetic dentist. Their work is not confined to regular cleaning and tooth extraction but extends to dental fillings, teeth whitening, dental veneers, dental implants and full mouth extraction. They are considered by many as the fairy godmother of defective teeth and smile because they turn your dental nightmares into a Cinderella happy ending.

A cosmetic dentist focuses more on the improvement of a patient’s mouth, teeth and smile. It is also referred to as restorative dental treatment because it makes the impossible, a possibility. It uses common dental procedures like dental fillings to save and treat decayed teeth without the worry of leaving visible dark spots on your teeth.

A cosmetic dentist uses different technologies that will help in teeth preservation. This includes laser treatment which results to a more fast, convenient and comfortable way of gaining or regaining a perfect white smile. They use porcelain, composite materials, gold, amalgam, and chemical whiteners that are all safe and effective mixtures used in gaining that superstar smile. Some of the most common types of procedures that they perform include the following:

Dental Veneers are extremely helpful for patients who needs tooth correction, chips repair and cracks. These are custom designed shells made from ceramic materials that will eventually cover unwanted tooth gaps, chips or cracks. These are masterfully crafted in a high-tech laboratory which creates a near natural look artificial tooth for you.

Dental Implants or artificial tooth root replacement are also applied by a cosmetic dentist to serve as compensation for tooth loss. It aids in face reconstruction because it lessens collapse of the face due to tooth loss and makes you look a lot younger.

Teeth Whitening is another common dental procedure performed by a cosmetic dentist. In this procedure, a high-concentrated peroxide gel will be applied to your teeth and will last for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The application will be repeated at several intervals but will normally last for only an hour.

These are just a few of the services a cosmetic dentist can do for but for a more extensive knowledge of these services you can use http://www.soladentalspa.com

Dental insurance covers your oral health needs for one calendar year. Each company differs on the type of dental coverage and maximum amount which they are willing to cover in relation to your dental needs. Each insurance owner enjoys a list of discounted dental treatments and procedures for the entire year. Unfortunately, not all insurance owners take advantage of their benefits and fail to consume the maximum amount of their end of the year dental insurance. Some of them even fail to visit their dentists at least twice a year to have a regular basic dental cleaning which is vital for any person’s oral health.

So if you are one of these insurance owners, it is best to scan through the list of dental services offered by your insurance company and start utilizing it before the year ends.

The benefits of a dental insurance are not eternal. It regularly expires after one calendar year and needs to be renewed if the insurance owner wants to keep enjoying its services. Unfortunately, the flow of economy is yet to be stabilized and you never know if you can still renew your dental insurance in the future. Dental treatments are constantly on the rise and the possibility of increased dental fees in the future together with the chances that dental insurance premium rates will increase is highly probable. Taking all these factors in consideration, it is best for you to utilize the remaining funds of your end of the year dental insurance before it expires. But if you plan to have a major dental treatment and used most of plan then it is advisable for you to continue it next year when new and more funds are available.

Proper planning, meticulous calculation and efficient record-keeping are major factors for you to get the maximum result of your end of the year dental insurance. But if you wish to know more about your oral health and concerns which relates to your teeth you may find interesting information at http://www.soladentalspa.com

We all know that kids need to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. And the reason… We know it too well. Let’s just repeat it to make sure.

We start from the beginning as they bite into it. Yes! Good for your child’s teeth (we had to say it).

Most of the vitamins and minerals children need to develop, grow, think and fight disease are found in fruits and vegetables. The challenge is how to avoid all that nagging about healthy food and creating a negative experience at the dinner table.

Did you ever hear about picking your own fruits? It’s just an amazing fun activity for entire family. Not only you get to enjoy picking your own fruits right from the trees and bushes, you’ll teach your child that they don’t grow in supermarkets. One more fact that any adult will appreciate: “You’ll actually burn calories picking fruits!”.

There are many farms you can go to that are nearby. To find a farm near you visit the Pick Your Own website.

We particularly like to got to Monmouth County in New Jersey. It is very close by to our Dental Office in Staten Island. There is a farm we like called Battleview Orchards. This place is famous for their Apple Cider Donuts. If you like sweets… Oh My God!!! They are sweet!!!

Here are some tips:

Take the camera. You want some memory to go back to, especially if you climb that tree to reach for sun bathing peaches.

Arrive early. You’ll be surprised to find out that many fields are emptied by noon.

Make sure to apply sunscreen. Even walking between trees will not help you hide away from sun rays.

When you arrive at the farm, take some time at the beginning to explain to your kids on how to identify and pick ripe fruit. You’ll be surprised to find out that you may not know it all yourselves. Did you know that Peaches are best picked when the fruit separates easily from the twigs? You have to pick them when the ground color changes from green to yellow. The skin of yellow-fleshed varieties ripens to an orange tint, while the skin of white-fleshed varieties changes from greenish to yellow-white.

Don’t forget your wallet. You’ll have to pay for all the fruits you picked. Excluding what you ate while on the tree (Shh).

Your kids will love it, remember it and they’ll have the fruit of their efforts – literally – to take home as a reward.

Don’t stop there. Spend some extra time and make a jam out of your harvest with kids. That would be an experience of a life time.

"What to Expect When You’re Expecting" - during dental visit. We put together a short summary to help you understand your dental options while pregnant

Are you expectant mother? Congratulations!

You’re excited and curious of What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

First, an old good advise – “Don’t stress too much! Your baby feels your stress.”.
And not only your stress…. While pregnant, it’s important to take care of your health more than ever.

You can start by:

Seeing your OB/GYN Doctor or midwife regularly

Getting important prenatal tests

Eating well and staying active

Not smoking or drinking

Preventing infections

Seeing your dentist

Taking care of your mouth while you are pregnant is important for you and your baby.

If you’re just planning to get pregnant, then you should see your dentist NOW and get teeth professionally cleaned, gum tissue carefully examined, and any oral health problems identified treated in advance of your pregnancy.

Untreated dental disease can lead to pain, infections and unnecessary exposure to medications, any of which could harm the developing fetus. Poor oral health also can affect the nutritional intake of expectant mothers, which is essential for fetal growth and survival.

If you’re pregnant:

Inform your dentist (doctor). It will greatly help to plan for your treatment and procedures.

It is always wise to notify your dentist of any medications you’re taking and their dosage, especially when you’re pregnant. Your dental treatment plan may be altered based on this information.

Avoid radiography exam (X-Ray) during pregnancy. However, if X-rays are essential, then your dentist will use extreme caution to protect you and your baby. While radiation from dental X-rays is extremely low, advances in dental technology have made them even safer. Digital X-Rays reduces exposure to radiation by almost 90%

Don’t skip your dental checkup appointment. Regular periodontal examinations are very important during pregnancy. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, put you at increased risk for periodontal disease and for tender gums that bleed easily – a condition called pregnancy gingivitis

What pregnant women should do to improve their oral health

Floss and brush your teeth regularly at least twice a day and don’t forget your tongue while you’re at it.

If you cannot brush your teeth because you feel sick, rinse your mouth with water or a mouth rinse that has fluoride.

If you vomit, rinse your mouth with water.

Limit foods containing sugar to mealtimes only.

Choose water or low-fat milk as a beverage. Avoid carbonated beverages during pregnancy.

Choose fruit rather than fruit juice to meet the recommended daily fruit intake for you and your child.

Obtain necessary dental treatment before delivery.

* American Dental Association recently published a study from research team, led by Dr. Bryan Michalowicz of the University of Minnesota that Pregnant women can safely undergo essential dental treatment and receive topical and local anesthetics at 13 to 21 weeks gestation, according to a study published in the June issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association. Researchers randomly assigned 823 pregnant women with periodontitis to receive scaling and root planing, either at 13 to 21 weeks’ gestation or up to three months after delivery. Throughout the trial, obstetric nurses reviewed medical records to monitor subjects for serious adverse events.

Let’s face it. Accidents do happen! The worst case scenario is your tooth gets knocked out. There is a chance and a pretty good chance to save that knocked-out tooth if you do the following:

Pick up the tooth with care and make sure NOT to touch tooth by its root. You may damage the sensitive root area and make it impossible to save it.

The tooth can be briefly rinsed with saline water or milk. DO NOT scrub or wipe the tooth.

The tooth should be inspected for fractures. If the tooth is not broken, try to reinsert the clean tooth into the socket. Keep the tooth in place by biting on gauze. If you can’t put the tooth back because of bleeding or swelling, transport the tooth in a cup containing enough milk to cover the tooth.

The amount of time elapsed since the accident is critical in the prognosis of the tooth so seek immediate dental care!

Important!

Baby teeth are NOT replaced in the socket as this can damage the development of permanent tooth underneath, however, seek prompt care by a pediatric dentist at www.SolaDentalKids.com or call 718-948-2072.
